Art of Archery Aims For Success
December 12, 2016
Sports of all kinds have a place at the school, from football to golf. However, senior Shabeeh Rizvi wanted to share his passion for a more uncommon sport, archery. He decided to take a shot at it, and thus, a new club, Art of Archery made its debut.
“The idea just hit me one night,” Rizvi said. “I asked a few people, and they said it sounded really fun. That just ultimately motivated me, so I said ‘I’m going to do as much as I can to make sure people get to learn archery.’”
Most of the members of Art of Archery are rather new to the sport. However, Rizvi has been practicing for years.
“One day, my uncle came over with a bow and arrow and he took me over to the range,” Rizvi said. “Ultimately, after I went there and started practicing, I realized that I really have a passion for this. So now, I thought I’d get some other people into it, too.”
Art of Archery meets every Thursday, mainly for team-building, since they cannot practice at school. They are currently waiting to be able to go try it for the first time at the Texas Archery Academy (TXAA) in McKinney.
“We started off by learning how to do it,” Co-Vice President Steven Adorno said. “But because we can’t do archery in school since it’s dangerous, we will go to the TXAA every Sunday.”
The students also watched videos in meetings. They learned about fundamentals through them to prepare for when they can actually visit the TXAA.
“We watch videos and eat donuts,” Rizvi said. “We have free donuts for club members every week. We also study trick shots off of moving cars and shots at moving objects.”
The students primarily plan to practice continuously and focus on improving their skills.
“For now we’re just developing the fundamentals,” Co-Vice president Armon Montazeri said.“Second semester, we might look into competition.”
Rizvi wishes to help the members of Art of Archery improve. He wants to pass his hobby onto others.
“My main goal is to just make sure that everyone who wants to learn archery actually gets the opportunity,” Rizvi said. “I want to help them be as perfect as they can at it.”
For now, the club is not as active as its members want it to be. Montazeri is in the process of making arrangements so that practice can begin soon.
“I feel like people might be turned off by the idea that we cannot do much at school,” Adorno said. “I would really recommend that people come see us on Sundays, because it’s more interesting.”
As a new club, Art of Archery’s success is yet to be known. However, Rizvi urges people to come by and give it a chance.
“Give it a try, and see if you like it or not,” Rizvi said. “Archery becomes really fun if you can develop a passion for it, so it’s definitely worth a shot.”
