Toys for Tots: A Holiday Dream
December 12, 2017
This holiday season, The Plano West Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE), is looking to help make children’s wishes come true. They are having their annual Holiday Dreams toy drive in order to help other Plano Independent School District (PISD) students enjoy the winter.
“TAFE gives the opportunity for future teachers to give back to our community’s children,” Mrs. Begis, the sponsor for TAFE, said. “We wanted to do this to help others in our community.”
The TAFE toy drive helps over 400 kids this year by giving them new toys over the holidays.
“The toy drive makes the kids’ year,” senior Avery Muckey said. “It helps support families who can’t afford presents for the holidays.”
Although Plano is one of the most well off suburbs in America, as well as having a median household income of $79,234 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 8.1% of Plano citizens live below the poverty line. The toy drive was started a few years ago in order to provide and aid others in the community. Last year, TAFE helped give 375 kids toys during the holidays.
“We worked with administration from elementary schools, and we wanted to help children in need,” Begis said.
TAFE was founded by Dr. Carroll Thomas in order to provide students with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about pursuing careers in education.
“TAFE helps us give back to the children and we are very thankful for all of the gifts we receive,” Begis said.
Along with preparing students for a future in education, TAFE believes that helping give back to the community is a fantastic way to bring people from all walks of life together.
“It is very rewarding to be able to help these kids, and it means a lot to all of us,” Muckey said.
Alex Arkwright, the president of the TAFE chapter at Plano West, also enjoys assisting others.
“We’re looking for new books, toys, games, school supplies, gift cards, sports equipment, toiletry items and clothing,” Arkwright said.
The holiday season is a great way to help the people around us who are in need, and donating gifts to TAFE and their toy drive will help make children’s wishes come true.
“It is very impactful and our toy drive is a lovely opportunity to give blessings and presents to those are in need,” Arkwright said.
