One Man With all That Power
December 8, 2016
Whether fans were in the United States or Europe, Kanye West’s Saint Pablo Tour was able to give them the experience of a lifetime. Although the second leg of his tour has been cancelled due to health and family problems, the announcement of his return to cities across the country left everyone buzzing. It did not matter whether fans were Saint Pablo Tour veterans or first-timers, tickets quickly sold out and fans simply could not wait to wild out to their favorite songs under the man himself.
West’s tours have always had a setup completely different than what other artists use for their shows. He renewed this idea in his Saint Pablo Tour by having his stage totally empty except for himself. However, there was one small thing about the stage that set this tour apart: it was floating above the crowd. A misconception of the floating stage was that it strained people’s neck to look up at him, but he hovered above fans at a comfortable yet intimate distance so that they could party with their idol. The lights stayed an orange-yellow mix for the majority of the show, keeping the theme of his latest album “The Life of Pablo.” Even though everything from the stage to lighting emphasized a minimalistic concept, they still worked together perfectly to create an environment of free spirit for everyone to enjoy themselves.
It is not often you go to a concert and find yourself inside an art project. The thing that really made the Saint Pablo Tour an experience unlike anything else was the crowd. Love and excitement was buzzing through the venue as this concert was what everyone had been anticipating ever since tickets went on sale. Most fans who had seats did not get the same experience as those who were on the floor. The floor was completely empty, allowing the audience to move around as they pleased, whether it was to follow the stage around or move to the back to try and spot his wife, Kim Kardashian. The floor consisted of his most die-hard fans who would belt out the words to his songs, and jump as high as they could to the beat. The energy and passion of this crowd was like no other, and made everyone fill with pride as to what they were a part of. Having the music stop but hearing the crowd continue the song themselves was one of the most beautiful sounds of the night, as fans released all their emotions and connections to the song at that moment, inevitably forming goosebumps everywhere.
The hype of the Saint Pablo Tour not only resonated to his fans, but even to celebrities across the country. Nearly every major city had a celebrity appearance, ranging anywhere from “Panda” artist Desiigner to Jonah Hill. Most celebrities knew of the incredible experience that the floor had to offer, as that was where they were mostly spotted. Not many people get to say that they partied with the entire Kardashian family or world-renowned supermodels. Other than major bragging rights, getting to dance to West’s songs right next to celebrities was truly a unique and eye-opening experience. No one seemed to notice, but rapper Travis Scott showed up to the Dallas concert in a tan ski mask, ready to show the crowd the right way to party. He was one of the most aggressive members of the audience, not one to be in a mosh pit with if it is someone’s first time. Even though he was quite terrifying at first, his “enthusiasm” resonated with those around him and allowed everyone to have a great time.
Whether a fan was a multimillionaire rapper or someone who had to work overtime to save just enough to get tickets, the Saint Pablo Tour was an experience like no other and worth every penny. The two hours spent under the floating stage provided an escape from reality for those who needed one, and the audience definitely seemed to not take that time for granted. If he decides to renew this tour or come back with a new album in the future, it would be wise to not miss out on seeing him live to fully understand the art behind Kanye West.
