Gilmore Girls Revival: Where They Lead, We Will Follow

After countless cups of coffee, a couple of nights of stress-relieving tap dancing, a funeral, a few run-in’s with the ‘Thirtysomething group’ and even a rare sighting of Emily Gilmore in jeans, the “Gilmore Girls (GG) Revival: A Year In The Life” came to an end, leaving an even bigger wave of nostalgia and melancholy behind to keep company with many die-hard GG fans. Just like the ending of the show’s seventh season, it did not seem to be enough to nurse the homesickness that nuzzled its way back into fan’s hearts. Pressing play on the light blue Netflix Original cover brought on many different waves of emotion. For some, tears spilled over only six minutes in. The years of fluent ‘Gilmorism’ that had been stirring inside many fans waiting for the chance to reappear was given the perfect outlet. Seeing the cast acting like no time had passed made it so much easier to fall back into the continuation of life in Stars Hollow, and hearing the speed of the characters’ fast-paced dialogue was much more than your average “welcome home.” Fans followed the beloved mother-daughter pair around for a short year, through all the seasons and all the seemingly classic, yet new hardships each character encountered. There were laughs, tears, thrown bagels, ‘Ooo-ber rides’ and even a few “Hamilton” references to keep the familiar audience entertained, and new fans wanting more. Rory received visits from all her essential and beloved love interests, and even Lorelai got a visit from Jason (Digger) Stiles, bringing on a sense of familiarity and excitement that denoted how much each cast member seemed to love the show as much as the fans did. All of the cast members took breaks from whatever project they had been working on to return home to the show just as many fans hoped they would. Lauren Graham, who plays the reigning Lorelai, even took time to write “Talking As Fast As I Can,” a book that is currently out and available to order about her Gilmore Girls journey, from filming the show to returning to film the revival. Many guest stars such as Mae Whitman, Rachael Ray, Sutton Foster and the favored ‘Gilmore Guys’ made appearances in the four episode long revival proving that even big-name stars could not deny the unbreakable bond that overtakes a person when living through what is considered to some, the best television show to ever air. The cast, much like its fans, have aged throughout the years and some more than others. The loss of one of the pillars of the show, Edward Herrmann, who played Richard Gilmore, Lorelai’s father was a hard obstacle to overcome when actors and writers reunited to begin filming the revival. His life was remembered by the cast while filming and promoting the new short series, and will continued to be remembered through the shows plot. As a form of promotion, the cast hosted a Gilmore Girls Fan Fest where fans were able to spend the weekend partaking in activities such as touring the real Stars Hollow, the Inn that inspired ‘The Dragonfly’ and attending special screenings and panels along with the cast members. Hep Alien, the band that Lane (Keiko Agena) plays drums for even performed a reunion show. At the end of it all, fans were left with the closure they had been seeking ever since Rory took off as a reporter to follow Presidential candidate Barack Obama on the campaign trail at the end of season seven. New questions, (like when is Rory going to break up with Paul?)  were asked and answered (and cried over) at the end of the precious six hours spent revisiting the lives of the iconic mother and daughter duo. It was almost as if fans had just had coffee with an old friend, and are forever grateful for the chance to relive the sense of belonging and relatability that had followed them around for all those seasons, and it is something that will live on alongside the many beloved and cherished episodes.
