Magic Returns to Theatres

Michael de Silva, Staff Writer

J.K Rowling is making magic once again. Warner Bros. is trying to capitalize on the Harry Potter universe’s critical acclaim and immense popularity with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The movie, opening on Nov. 18, is based on Rowling’s 2001 book of the same name.

The movie was announced in 2013. David Yates, director of the final four Harry Potter movies, returned to direct Fantastic Beasts as well. This also marks J.K. Rowling’s debut as a screenwriter. Previously, she only took a supervising role in the production of the adaptations of her books. The cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol and more.

The film takes place in 1926 when the eccentric wizard Newt Scamander makes a stop in New York after completing an expedition to research and rescue magical beasts around the world. However, an incident occurs that results in the escape of many of these creatures. With tension in the city already being high, Scamander is put under suspicion. It is up to him to recover his collection and clear his name.

In the book Fantastic Beasts, Rowling writes from the perspective of Scamander, who is a writer in the Harry Potter universe, in the form of journal entries. Originally, Fantastic Beasts was announced as a trilogy of movies. However, last month, Rowling announced that it is now a five-part series. Because Fantastic Beasts is a fictional journal and not a novel, the movie series is not an adaption. Instead, the films will be original stories that are based off of the journal. This will give fans hours of new writing by Rowling over the years to come. People who have missed having Harry Potter movies to look forward to every year will have the pleasure of experiencing a fresh alternative.

Fantastic Beasts is quite possibly Warner Bros. biggest release of the year. The Harry Potter series has an enormous fan base, so Warner Bros. has been marketing the film for a whole year now. There has been a large social media campaign, primarily on Snapchat, to promote the movie. This includes two limited-time Snapchat filters created for the movie. In addition, a global fan event was held in London and Los Angeles on Oct. 13, including a live Q&A session that was followed by the premiere of new footage from the movie.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the last few years. Due to the success of the Harry Potter movies, it is expected to perform well in the box office. Hopefully with this film, Rowling can stupefy the world once again.
