Likelike Robot

A video of Sophia, the humanlike robot, has gone viral, making a strong presence on social media due to her realistic facial definition and humanlike skin. The eerily lifelike robot was created at the hands of Hanson Robotics and Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories with the goal of perfecting these machines to one day serve as health care, education, therapy and customer service programs.
The authenticity of this robot has stirred controversy concerning the role that robotics should play in everyday life, and whether or not their presence is somewhat dystopian. It is even predicted that these robots will become so advanced that they will blend into the rest of the human population and serve as not only service operators but as friends.
Sophia’s facial features were inspired by Hanson’s wife and Audrey Hepburn, giving her a friendly and vaguely familiar face. Her realistic skin is manufactured from patented silicon, allowing her to imitate a variety of facial expressions and carry engaging conversations. The combination of her lifelike facial features and believable facial expressions helps aid this robot to stand out among the rest as a new breed of true-to-life robots.
Inside of Sophia’s eyes are cameras that allow her to register people’s faces and make eye contact. She was also constructed using Alphabet’s Google Chrome voice recognition technology and other speech technologies that allow her to answer various questions and reply to commentary.
While a lot of people are weary about these advances, agreeing that the lifelike quality and functioning of the robot is unnatural, the creators believe that Sophia and her future robotic relatives will positively aid society.
