May 16, 2016
The life of Vincent Van Gogh was one filled with controversy and tragedy, paralleled by the perception of beauty and passion shown within his artwork. His legacy has perplexed many, leaving most with a sense of awe for his art and the stories behind the pieces.
In honor of this famous artist’s paintings, Polish director and painter Dorota Kobiela is collaborating with producer Hugh Welchman to create a film called Loving Vincent, which is based on the storylines woven within in Van Gogh’s artwork. In order to capture the true essence of Van Gogh’s life, the directors are connecting 800 autobiographical letters in an effort to put words to the story that was left to be viewed through his paintings.
To construct this 12 frame per second film, over 100 highly trained oil painters are contributing to the animation. Using the same techniques that Van Gogh used, these painters are modeling the entire film based on the movement and motion that his paintings are famous for. Paintings such as Starry Night and Starry Night Over the Rhone will be brought to life through the animation of the film.
Critics are cautious about the outcome of Loving Vincent due to the fact that it is the world’s first feature-length painted animation film. Breakthru Entertainment and Trademark Films, companies that specialize in animated movies, are behind the production of Loving Vincent.
Although there is not a set release date for the movie, it is expected to be released sometime by the end of this year. Many artists, as well as movie fanatics, are said to be greatly anticipating the release of the film that not only captures the true essence of Van Gogh’s artwork, but the true essence of Van Gogh’s life.
