Mattel Introduces New Barbies
April 8, 2016
The “Fashionistas” is a new line of Mattel’s Barbie dolls that celebrate the diversity of women. With three body types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles that create 33 different dolls, Barbies finally have an accurate representation of the people they are sold to. These dolls were released for sale in stores, such as Target and Toys ‘R’ Us, on March 1.
In recent years, Mattel has received backlash and criticism due to their ongoing production of slender, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Barbie. Many have felt that a large corporation, such as Mattel, should incorporate the diversity of the average American women. Even in Hollywood, the cinematic industry is actively integrating people of color, including Lupita Nyong’o, Gina Rodriguez and Viola Davis.
In the past, Mattel’s critics have commented on the company’s lack of appreciation of American diversity. They say that the beauty ideals of the original Barbie are outdated and boring, while diversified beauty ideals and admiration of all body types brings greater benefit to society.
When Mattel released the “Fashionistas,” they received tremendous praise and relief from their buyers. Numerous parents are relieved that they can give their children a doll that is more relatable, instead of giving them one that sets unrealistic expectations. Studies show that children not only use dolls as a form of amusement but also as an example of aspiration. With dolls that provide realistic expectations, the children have the ability to grow up with greater confidence.
Target, Toys ‘R’ US, and other large corporations are optimistic about this new addition to the Barbie franchise. Mattel believes “Fashionistas” will attract a greater amount of potential consumers than their original design for Barbie. Petite, curvy and tall dolls with various skin tones have a larger appeal to a variety of people. Overall, Mattel has begun to advocate diversity and promote body appreciation for young children.
