Jewish Students Create Unity

Many Jewish students feel a lack of community on campus, but Jewish Student Union (JSU) is aiding in establishing a tight-knit network of these juniors and seniors. This is a place for students to come together to discuss topics about Judaism, enjoy some food and have a good time.
“Previously, there was no Jewish presence on campus,” junior Ryan Yablonsky said. “It’s comforting to know that there is a home for all Jewish students at West.”
As the first JSU meeting commences, aroma of cheese pizza fills the air. Blenders buzz and fruits fly all over the room. Students laugh as they make smoothies and talk about their days. President and senior Maddie Weiner started the club to create a space where Jewish students could come together and be a part of something bigger.
“We have meetings and events every other Thursday,” Weiner said. “At these events, we eat food, talk about relevant things happening in the Jewish community, an upcoming Jewish holiday or anything on someone’s mind.”
The students are able to give back to the Jewish community while enjoying time with their friends.
“With JSU, we have the opportunity to take trips, do fun and creative projects or have events that any of the members are able to plan,” Weiner said. “We want all Jewish students to feel welcome.”
The club hopes to initiate new friendships among students and help their religious identity and heritage grow.
“My favorite part of this club is learning new things and making new friends who I have being Jewish in common with,” junior Audrey Zane said. “I encourage all of my Jewish friends to come, too.”
Rabbi Michael Lomner from Yavneh Academy of Dallas is the head of the JSU for the Dallas area and will be attending future meetings. His presence adds an important mentorship to club members.
“Rabbi Lomner brings us free food and helps to put together the groups,” Weiner said. “He’s there to ensure we are all having the best time at our events.”
The ultimate goal of JSU is not to separate groups of people but to promote equality and diversity in the student body.
“There needs to be a place on campus where each student feels important,” Weiner said. “My hope for this club is to make Plano West more accepting of all beliefs and religions on our diverse campus.”
