From Stress to Success
December 10, 2015
With final exams rapidly approaching, it is easy to become stressed out and disregard precious studying time. This may lead to bad decisions, such as pulling all nighters, which in turn results in detrimental mistakes like forgetting your calculator on exam day. Have no fear. Preparing for exams is easier than you may think. Do not let the stress and flooding papers get to you. Here are a list of tips that will act as a helping hand during exam preparation and turn stress into success.
- Make a list of all the classes you are studying for. Write down the classes you are taking and jot down the basics of what you need to know for each test. Make this outline neat and organized. Once you have the materials in front of you, begin studying.
- Get your exam schedule. Try to get your exam schedule as early as possible from your teachers. By doing this, you can study accordingly in a timely manner and know what to expect.
- Start studying early. This is not a time for procrastination. While pulling an all nighter is a popular tendency among students, it may not be in your best interest. Get a head start now. If you have your schedule and notes in front of you, there is no excuse to study for seven tests the night before. Start reviewing as early as possible to avoid unwanted stress. Studying a little bit each day can go a long way.
- Know how to study. We have all been in school long enough, but not all of us have mastered our own perfect studying techniques. There are many ways to study for an exam, and it can even be fun. Make up songs to help you remember vital information, such as equations or the map of Europe. Alternatively, you could make a study group with people who have the same work ethic as you. Working with your best friends usually results in getting nothing done. Find a study method that works for you, whether that be with a buddy or independently. Never reject making flashcards, using Quizlet or taking online practice tests. Those are all great options. Master your study method for a better chance of acing your exams.
- Go to tutorial sessions. Take advantage of extra help. Find out your tutorial schedules and go to as many as you can in areas you struggle in. Make a goal to attend at least two tutorial sessions for each exam you have to take. Hearing things a second or third time never hurts.
- Prepare the night before. Get a good night sleep before your tests and do not pull an all nighter. Sleeping is more effective for your overall health rather than cramming all night and feeling exhausted on exam day. It does no good studying for an exam for five hours when you are probably exhausted and unfocused. Get your sleep.
- Quiz each other. Find a partner and quiz each other. Verbally giving information or pretending like you are teaching someone else is a studying tactic that works wonders. Give it a go or even teach a topic to a family member at home for extra practice.
- Eat brain-boosting food. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially on exam day. Make sure to eat brain food to get the blood flowing before your exam. Healthy food choices on exam day include eggs, nuts, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Combine all of these steps to reach success. Best of luck on your exams.
