Rooster Teeth Finds Success With YouTube
Production company and YouTube phenomena Rooster Teeth (RT) have been busy this year. They are known for the longest running animated web series Red vs. Blue (RvB) as well as the YouTube channel Achievement Hunter (AH) that post Lets Plays.
The company started April 1, 2003, when the first episode of Red vs. Blue was released. Red vs. Blue is a web series that is filmed in the popular video game series Halo, but in recent years, extra animation outside of the game has been added to enhance the show. This year on April 1, RvB premiered the first episode of its 13 season.
Last year, RT opened up a campaign to raise money to produce a sci-fi comedy movie, titled Lazer Team. The community rose to the occasion and ended up raising over two million dollars, far exceeding their original goal of $650,000. The movie is set to be released later this year, with no definite date set as of yet. The movie tells the story of four guys that find alien technology and are thrust into the roles of being heroes to Earth.
Also set for later this year is their annual gaming convention, called RTX, which will take place August 7-9. The first event started in 2011, where only 200 people were expected to be in attendance, but over 500 people bought tickets. In 2014, RTX attendance was over 30,000 people. Attendees can meet their favorite RT members, attend panels, buy merchandise and mingle with other people in the community.
In February, the Achievement Hunter segment put on a new type of show, titled Let’s Play Live. It involved the men and women of AH playing video games onstage, getting help from the audience and even riding around on a gurney playing Surgeon Simulator. The event in Austin nearly sold out, and whereas normally RT and AH live stream all of their events, this one was exclusive to the people that attended.
One of the shows that RT creates and produces is called RWBY. The show is set in a fictional world full of monsters, and focuses on the team consisting of Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang. The show won at the 2014 International Academy of Web Television for Best Animated Series, as well as at the 2014 Streamy Awards for Best Animated Series and the soundtrack won for Best original score. Earlier this year, creative director and animator Monty Oum passed away due to a complication during a simple surgery procedure.
As the company continues to grow, bigger and better opportunities appear for the beloved cast. Ray Narvaez Jr., member of AH, had his last day in the RT office and plans to switch over to Twitch, where he wants to stream games full time. Kara Eberle, voice actor and RT office manager, recently announced that she no longer works in the RT office and now has a new job as an Executive Assistant at an animation company. Though they will be missed by many, they are exemplifying that if an opportunity presents itself, they should take it and run with it.
