Snapchat has always been about sharing what you are doing through pictures that disappear after several seconds. If you are visiting a cool city or snapping a photo of your Starbucks drink, you are able to upload it to ‘My Story’ and share it with your friends, with the picture lasting on your story for 24 hours. But that is old news. Now, you can see what the whole world is doing with ‘Our Story.’

‘Our Story’ is a new feature that lets users post pictures or videos at the same event location and contribute snaps to the story that is being shared. A typical story showcasing an event can consist of over one hundred photos and videos. If you cannot make it to an event, watching ‘Our Story’ makes you feel like you are a part of the experience. Anyone with the Snapchat application is able to view these pictures and videos and be a part of the event from home. This is a modernized way to see what is going on around the world, whether it be a parade, concert or even a hot air balloon festival. All posts are anonymous, but they are all related to the same event going on. It only shows the video or picture the person took while celebrating the specified occasion.

‘Our Story’ posts a variety of events ranging in many categories and each gets tens of millions of views. The new and popular feature was first tested at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas in June 2014 and was later followed up with another test at the World Cup in Brazil in July. Both of these stories were a huge hit and received millions of views, inspiring the kickoff to the new update. Other stories that have been posted include Black Friday shopping, New York Fashion Week and college football games.

Being able to see these events right from your mobile phone has never been done so easily.

This is their most impacting update that Snapchat has made, but there are other minor ones that have both pleased and upset its users. Snapchat recently removed the ability to see other people’s “best friends” on the app, which disappointed many users. However, there was one update that everyone had been waiting for: the ability to play your own music from your phone while simultaneously recording a video. If you wanted to record something in the past, you had to stop your music. Now, you can do both tasks at the same time.
