Rock Music Takes Dallas
April 7, 2015
As one of the biggest alternative music festivals in the country, people have high expectations for this year’s Edgefest. Edgefest 2015, sponsored by iHeartRadio, is the 25th Edgefest in history and will take place on April 25 at Toyota Stadium in downtown Dallas. Some bands that Edgefest will feature include The Offspring, Modest Mouse, Hozier, Vance Joy, AWOLNATION, New Politics, Cage the Elephant and more.
Edgefest in America originated in 1992 and was influenced by the radio station 102.1 The Edge. The very first Edgefest housed purely 90s bands for the night such as Pearl Jam, The Origin, Sugar Cubes, Charlatans UK, Dramarama and Psychefunkapus.
The Edgefest website lets fans know ahead of time what and what not to bring to Edgefest. Bags and purses are allowed; however, they will be searched before entering the stadium. Some items that are not allowed are bottles, cans, coolers, containers, or food and drinks, as well as air horns, whistles, fireworks, slingshots or any sort of weapon. These restrictions are for the safety of Edgefest goers and the performers themselves, as well as any security at the event.
The idea for Edgefest was actually conceived in Canada in 1987 as a gift to the Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge listeners and as a birthday bash for the station’s 10th anniversary. The festival was traditionally thrown outdoors in the late 80s, but over time, it has gradually moved itself indoors. Since it was seen as a financial risk for the station in 1987, no one could have guessed how popular the event would later turn out. In 1987, tickets for Edgefest only cost $1.02 per ticket, which attracted around 25,000 people to the first show. Today, the average price for an Edgefest ticket is $73.00.
Edgefest 2015 is definitely something to look forward to for anyone that calls themselves a fan of alternative rock.
