Earth Day Story

In a couple of weeks, thousands of people across the country will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Since its conception in April 22, 1970, this widespread campaign for environmental awareness has inspired and encouraged people all over the globe to become more mindful of their impact on the environment. While our dependence on automobiles, factories and technology has made it virtually impossible to leave nature untainted, there are still ways to reduce our carbon footprint and give back to Mother Nature.

  1. Rethink your transportation.

Carpool with a friend to reduce your gas mileage. If you are buying a new car, go for the eco-friendly hybrids rather than the gas guzzling SUVs. You will be helping the environment, and as an added bonus, your wallet will be fatter as a result of not having to spend so much to fill up your tank. If you really want to cut down on your gasoline consumption, walk, ride your bike or take public transportation.

  1. Conserve water.

If you like to take extra-long showers or leave the water running while you brush your teeth, try changing your habits in order to help the environment. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or lathering up, and your parents will thank you when they get their next water bill.

  1. Generate less waste.

Keep in mind the common “reduce, reuse, recycle” the next time you throw out an item. Drop your trash in the proper container: plastic, glass, aluminum and paper are all recyclables. Reduce your waste production by using reusable water bottles and shopping bags. And the next time you visit Pinterest, find some do-it-yourself (DIY) projects that are both fun and eco-friendly.

  1. Spend some time in the garden.

If you do not mind getting your hands dirty, pick up some seed packets and plant a garden. You can save money on produce by growing your own fruits and vegetables, or if you simply want to plant some flowers and shrubbery, you will still be doing the earth a favor.
