Echo… Echo… Echo…
Amazon releases voice-commanded device
Have you ever wanted Siri to be able to answer all your questions without having to touch your phone? Now you can. Amazon recently released the Amazon Echo, a device that is a crossover between Siri and a radio.
The Echo, a small black cylinder that can recognize your question from the other side of a room, is designed for hands-free use. This device only has two buttons: a mute button and an action button. It also comes with a portable remote that has a microphone and volume controls. The speakers on the device spread in a full circle around it, allowing for clear sound no matter what side of the room you are on.
The Amazon Echo’s retail price is $199, but Amazon Prime members can get it for $99. You can only purchase the device by invitation, meaning that you make Amazon aware of your interest and they will send you an email if you are chosen to purchase. It is only available on the Amazon website.
The possibilities for questions are endless. In order to start a question, the user must use the Echo’s wake word, Amazon. The Echo receives all of its answers from Amazon web services or your phone or tablet, and you can ask it almost anything from playing a certain playlist to asking what the weather for the next day is.
The Echo learns and adapts to the users speech patterns in order to better understand them in the future. It can also connect to your Amazon phone or tablet via the Amazon Echo app, which can be used when not in range of the Echo.
The Amazon Echo is basically a hands free, talking version of Google, answering whatever questions you can throw at it and playing whatever music you have available on your Amazon electronic device.
