Choir Student Teacher’s Crescendo to Success

Although being placed in a new environment can be intimidating, the new choir student teacher Seth Johnston came into West with great enthusiasm and a big passion for singing. Through his struggles of adjusting and meeting many students at once, his positive attitude has reflected amongst the students, and he loves what he is doing. The students also appreciate what he has brought to the table thus far.

Johnston is helping out in the choir department to see what being a choir teacher is like.

“I am at Texas A&M University,” Johnston said. “This job is part of college. It’s my last semester of my degree plan.”

Working at a separate high school showed Johnston that discovering the equilibrium between school and work is essential.

“I have the responsibilities of a teacher, so I try my best to stay on top of things and be organized,” Johnston said.

Finding a balance is important to Johnston, but with this comes many learning experiences. His passion for singing drives him towards doing his best and encourages his students to do the same.

“I’ve had great mentors and always loved singing,” Johnston said. “It’s something I’ll always see myself doing. I also like being with the kids and getting to know them.”

Junior Melanie Wang is also excited about Johnston joining the team. Her passion for singing is an interest that she shares with Johnston.

“He has been great so far,” Wang said. “Mr. Johnston definitely knows what he is doing. I’m excited to see what he will bring to the choir group in the future.”

Being a student teacher can be entertaining and fun, but there were difficult obstacles he had to overcome.

“The hardest part for me was adjusting from college back to the high school environment,” Johnston said. “It was a difficult transition, but I made it through.”

Even though Johnston went through a slightly rocky start, he has fully adjusted and loves being a part of the choir team. Without feeling slight intimidation, it was easy for him to adjust quickly and get into the swing of things. It is evident that he is on the path towards success.

“I definitely enjoy this job a lot,” Johnston said. “They are some pretty awesome and talented kids.”
