Revealing the Oscar Nominees

With a new year comes the huge event in the entertainment business: award season. The Golden Globes aired on Jan. 11, and that was just the beginning. The nominees for the Academy Awards were announced on Jan. 15, and there has been a bit of controversy surrounding the nominees.

The Lego Movie, a huge hit animation film that came out in 2014, did not get nominated for Best Animated Feature. Among the nominees in the category are The Boxtrolls, Big Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (HTTYD2), Song of the Sea and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. HTTYD2 brought home a Golden Globe Award, but it is up against two new competitors, Song of the Sea and Princess Kaguya.

Boyhood won at the Golden Globes for Best Drama. However, the movie is now up against Selma, Birdman, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash, Grand Budapest Hotel, American Sniper and The Imitation Game. Box office hit Interstellar was not nominated for Best Picture, but it was nominated for Best Original Score.

Everyone was surprised when David Oyelowo, the actor who played Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, was not nominated for Best Actor. At the Golden Globe Awards, Julianne Moore won Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama. Also up for Best Actress Academy Award are Marion Cotillard, Rosamund Pike, Felicity Jones and Reese Witherspoon. Patricia Arquette won a Golden Globe for her performance in Boyhood and is nominated for another award against Emma Stone, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep and Keira Knightley.

Last but not least of the major parties is the Actor in a Supporting Role category. J.K. Simmons won the Golden Globe last month, and this time he will be competing with Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo.

As far as predictions go, Big Hero 6 is a movie that fans would like to see win at the Oscars. Selma is obviously the underdog because none of the actors or actresses were nominated for any of the acting categories. Boyhood has done well in the categories that it is nominated for, so we would expect that movie to do well. Julianne Moore will likely take home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Although Benedict Cumberbatch is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role and has a loyal fanbase behind him, he will probably get beat out by Bradley Cooper or Michael Keaton. J.K. Simmons is predicted to win Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and since Patricia Arquette took home the Golden Globe, she will probably do well at the Oscars.

Make sure to tune in to watch the Academy Awards on Feb. 22.
