Options if You Decide College Is Not For You
College is not for everyone. This is something that students are often told, but about 97% of West students end up at college anyway, without giving the alternatives much thought. Here are some alternative paths to consider when planning your future after high school.
Service
Many students go straight into the military after high school. There are many benefits to this option. The U.S. government provides a free college education for those who choose to serve. The five-year service requirement comes with a salary starting at $50,000.
Entrepreneurship
This may seem far-fetched, but some young adults start a business after high school. The experience of running your own business is not something you could easily get in college. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Walt Disney are a few famous examples of success.
Volunteer
Young adults may volunteer with a non-profit organization, such as the Peace Corps or Americorps. These organizations will cover necessary expenses, including room and board. Volunteering to help out those in need helps provide personal fulfillment.
Travel
Students may choose to travel for a year or two to foreign countries in an effort to learn more about different cultures, as well for personal enjoyment.
Find a Job
Getting an entry-level job only requires a high school diploma. Retail jobs in particular give people the ability to move up to a management position within a couple months to a year.
Mission Trips
Religious individuals either feel compelled to go on mission trips to aid those in need or to preach about their religion. For example, 19 year old members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) are encouraged to take a mission trip for two years to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Trade Schools
Some students choose to take their talents and refine them at schools that train for a specific trade. Some good examples are automotive or cosmetology schools. These schools allow direct connections to jobs upon graduation.
