Big Tex is Back in Town

As of Sept. 26, the Texas State Fair is back, which means fried food, rivalry college football games and carnival rides. The fair has been a part of Texas culture for 128 years and has now become a popular attraction for people of all ages and personalities.

“I go to the State Fair because my family goes every year to watch the University of Oklahoma versus the University of Texas football game in the Cotton Bowl,” senior Carson Ford said. “I have been going to the fair to watch Oklahoma football since I was in first grade.”

The State Fair also has many family fun activities to do that are popular among our students. Many enjoy the numerous rides, including the Texas Star ferris wheel, the tallest ferris wheel in North America.

“My favorite ride is the ride that spins you against the wall because it is thrilling,” junior Mitchell Walker said. “It is called the rotor.”

Another iconic part of the State Fair is the numerous fried foods available, including fried butter, fried Oreos and fried Poptarts.

“The weirdest thing I’ve had at the State Fair is the fried coke,” Walker said. “It was really gross.”

The State Fair also has many educational purposes, which our school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) takes advantage of every year.

“We go because it is Agricultural Awareness Day at the State Fair and we learn different facts about agriculture in Texas,” senior Hannah Fisher said. “I hope by going that I can get to know everyone in my FFA chapter better and to make more fun memories.”

These attractions will not be around for long though. The Texas State Fair will end on Oct. 19.

“I recommend going to the State Fair,” Walker said, “because it is a lot of fun for family and friends.”
