Having a Block Schedule: The Advantages of a Break
As students, we have a lot of to balance. Some of us have jobs, extracurricular activities, and some of us take multiple honors and advanced placement courses. Every day we come to school and have to suffer through five or seven class periods. This does not sound too terrible right? Well, when there is between four to six hours of homework every night, it can be quite a torturous task to sit through these classes every day without a break. Having a block schedule would be beneficial to students and help them manage their work.
For one thing, teachers give many tests, and some are on the same day. As a student, it can be difficult to study for two tests at once and be expected to make good grades on both. Teachers expect us to have a good night of sleep before entering to take the test. If we had a block schedule, then we would be able to divide our study time between two nights and then that way students can do well on both tests and get some well-deserved sleep instead of having to pull an all-nighter to make sure to do well on both.
The same goes for homework. For many students, we spend hours every night doing all the homework for all of our different subjects and we are expected to have everything completed and ready to turn in the next day. This puts a lot of stress on us and causes us to have break downs. Yes, we do have breakdowns from the large workloads. A block schedule would allow students to divide their workload and help students organize their time between their homework and other extracurricular such as sports or jobs.
With college applications and essays being a priority for seniors and the SAT and ACT taking up much study time for juniors, we need a break. We need time to relax and take a step back from all the work that is expected of us in our final years of high school and we deserve time to watch TV for an hour without having to worry about all the stress of our homework that is due the next day. So with all of this in mind, block scheduling would be better for our sanity.
