Bonding With Sherlock

A group of friends sit around in a classroom, laughing and discussing their favorite shows. They watch movies and learn about the culture surrounding their favorite genres. This is what members of the Sherlock Club do every other Friday after school.

“Sherlock is great because it’s a really good mystery series,” senior Juliette Pierre said. “I like the series a lot, and I really like how they translate from the Victorian age to modern day.”

Pierre was involved last year when now college freshmen Courtney Batch and Courtney Hsu started the club.

“We focused a lot on the culture of the Victorian Age itself,” Pierre said. “We also hung out, ate some food and shared our opinions about it.”

The club has a few different officer positions and the students that take up the responsibility help with running the club and making sure everything goes smoothly.

“I was an officer last year,” senior Hanna Mollhoff said. “I helped organize meetings and decided what activities to do.”

The main activity last year was a tea party in order to replicate English culture because Sherlock is set in London.

“It was a lot of fun,” Mollhoff said. “We had everyone bring different snacks, prepared tea and watched an episode of Sherlock.”

This year, senior Alan Ye took up the reins of the club and is continuing as the club’s president.

“It can’t be Sherlock all the time because it comes out every two years,” Ye said. “This year, the atmosphere is a little more relaxed. We’re just a group of friends that meet and hang out.”

The members of the club talk about other fandoms such as Supernatural and Once Upon a Time.

“This club really lets you meet people that like similar things that you do,” Mollhoff said. “At the heart of it, we’re just celebrating things that we like and we have fun while doing it.”
