Jesus Christ Superstar to Make its Debut
In the auditorium on Jan. 29-31, the theatre department will be performing Jesus Christ Superstar, a modern rock-opera version of the Old Testament.
“It’s been my favorite play for a long time,” co-director Grant Goble said, “so when we had the opportunity to perform it with all the original songs and lines, I knew we had to seize the opportunity.”
The cast has been chosen, with the leading role being played by senior Chris Clark.
“I actually auditioned for a different role during my initial audition,” Clark said. “I had been working on the role of Judas during the summer.”
Despite the unexpected role change, Clark accepted the pressure of the leading part.
“I have a huge responsibility to the incredible cast and co-leads to be on the top of my game,” Clark said. “That means I have to stay healthy, be on time to rehearsals, know my music and be dependable to my directors.”
But the work is not solely focused on the stage. In fact, the behind-the-scenes set design is equally important.
“This is my second production with the school where I’ve helped design the set and it really is amazing how much work is put into the show that the audience doesn’t see,” first year theatre tech student senior Kess Fullington said. “I help paint the set and do some basic lighting work. We’re also working on building a platform that will come to be very important throughout the play in regard to how the stage looks.”
This play is difficult in a way that is unlike this year’s previous performances.
“What makes this play especially difficult is that, like Les Miserables, it’s all vocal work, with no speaking lines,” tech director Norv Sykes said.
Nonetheless, the actors are rising to the challenge.
“It will be physically demanding, vocally challenging, and a lot of fun,” Clark said. “I think we have the opportunity to open doors for other high schools to do more controversial and difficult roles in the future.”
