Dribble, Pass, Shoot and Score
As of now, the basketball team is preseason ranked number one for the Texas Association of
Basketball Coaches, and the team is ranked number five in USA Today, a national publication.
“We really want to be prepared, in shape and be in the best condition possible so that we can go out and perform to the best of our ability,” center senior Tyler Davis said.
The guys are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals. Small forward senior DJ Hogg’s main goal is to get a State championship. Davis is hoping for the team to finish as number one in the state. But small forward senior Mickey Mitchell has his eyes set on a different prize.
“Everyone’s answer would probably be to win State championship,” Mitchell said. “But mine is to win one game at a time and to focus on that game, not to look ahead to 15 games down the season.”
Though playoffs are months away, Mitchell thinks that the team should set smaller goals and not get ahead of themselves. For the 2014-2015 season, the team is going to need to put in dedication and sweat on and off the court if they are going to achieve all of their goals.
“We have to pick it up,” Mitchell said, “not just in practice but on our own time.”
The basketball team has made it to State playoffs in the seven of eight years that the current coach, Anthony Morgan, has been coaching at West. Last year, the team made it to Regional Quarterfinals before losing to Richardson Berkley. Even though that loss was a disappointment to Wolfpack fans everywhere, Davis feels like the team is ready this year.
“I think we’re all putting everything into it,” Davis said. “Everyone is all in.”
