Live-Tweeting Royalty
Recently, Twitter was graced with the presence of British royalty. The Queen of England created her own Twitter account and dubbed it @BritishMonarchy. This might have come as a surprise to people due to the highly upheld traditional views of the monarchy. However, social media has erupted in support for this new modernized act of the Queen. Her first tweet welcomed guests to a new Information Age exhibit at the London Science Museum and was posted on Oct. 24, 2014 at 11:35 a.m. The tweet read, “It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.”. Before the Queen sent out this tweet, the account @BritishMonarchy had been run by different palace officials. This has been the only tweet the Queen has sent out so far. The account informs the general public about activities of the Royal Family and the monarchy through text updates, pictures and videos. The tweet was retweeted more than 3,500 times within the first hour and the follower count of @BritishMonarchy rose to nearly 10,000 more than it was the previous day. This action shows that the head of the monarchy is progressing into the modern world, leaving social media hopeful that it will see more tweets from the Queen in the near future.
This is not the first time royalty has been spotted on Twitter. For example, the Spanish Monarchy created an account that consists of information on the Spanish Royal Family and named it @SpanishRoyals. Like the account @BritishMonarchy, it shows that Spain is another country that has politicians advancing into the digital age. Nations around the world are seeking all kinds of different ways to connect better with their citizens, and Twitter is a tool that is helping countries accomplish that goal.
