College Application Checklist
Jan. 1, the regular decision application deadline for many colleges, is fast approaching. With the exception of those who have already been accepted into a school, high school seniors everywhere are scrambling to finish their applications in hopes that an acceptance letter from one of their choice colleges will find its way to their mailbox in April. Knowing that the effort they put into their applications over these next few weeks will ultimately have a great impact on the next four years of their lives, students are becoming more and more anxious. To help ease this, here is a checklist to help you get organized and keep the stress levels to a minimum.
- Research each college.
Most college admissions offices require more than just your biographical information. Schools will often want students to submit essays, resumes, transcripts, recommendation letters and financial aid information. Be sure to research the application materials needed for each school—if something is missing, admissions officers may not consider your application.
- Make note of the deadlines.
While many of the application deadlines occur on Jan. 1, some schools have different deadlines. Keep track of these dates so you can get everything submitted on time.
- Make a list of priorities.
If you are applying to multiple schools, rank them in order of importance to you and focus on the ones at the top of your list first. That way if you run out of time, you will at least have completed the applications to the colleges that matter to you most.
- Schedule your interviews.
Interviews are a way for colleges to learn more about you and see a side of you that may not have been conveyed through your application. Most schools will email you and give you instructions on coordinating an interview, so be sure to check your email regularly so you do not miss any important information.
- Submit your application.
Make sure to submit all parts of your application. Have a parent or friend look over the application before you turn it in to make sure that all the information is accurate. When you get the confirmation that your application has been received, print it off for your records in case their are any problems.
