Student Designs and Creates Video Games

Whether they defeat the gym leaders, vanquish Ganon, kill the Ender Dragon on hardcore mode or score the winning goal in Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), many people play video games. However, not that many individuals actually craft the adventure that so many gamers are eager to play. Junior Gabby Montemar is an exception to this, as she is constructing a world that gamers are getting ready to explore. Montemar has crafted a video game of her very own.

“It’s a game based on a fictitious world where people have these counterparts in an alternate universe,” Montemar said. “The game basically revolves around the players solving the conflict between the characters and their counterparts.”

The game was created on software called RPG Maker VXAce and is a PC 2D game. It requires players to move and interact with objects while pressing the spacebar and arrow keys. Players engage in battles with opponents in a fashion similar to the popular video game Pokemon.

“Gabby’s game is pretty impressive, given she’s doing most of the work herself,” junior Chloe Anderson said. “I mean, she’s asking for her friends’ opinions, but all the actual work is on her.”

Many find it fascinating to see young people accomplishing such advanced feats. Montemar has been working all summer in order to finish developing the game.

“It’s pretty cool to see all these new programs and software evolving,” junior and video game design student Betina Sevilla said. “People who make iPhone apps and PC games have a lot more to work with now.”

As the world enters a new age of technological advancement, people would like to find out what is in store for those involved in the internet technology field.

“I hope to see more people getting involved with video game development,” Sevilla said. “I can’t wait to see so many more advancements in the near future.”
