Birdies Are Flying Through the Air in New Badminton Club
The Badminton Club is a new club that was implemented at the end of September. Badminton is a sport that involves two teams consisting of two or four players. The game is played by using racquets to hit a shuttlecock, which is also known as a birdie.
“We’re trying to meet in the gyms because the wind really messes with the sport,” club founder, junior Si Qi Tong, said. “But all the gyms are occupied now.”
According to players, badminton is a challenging and energetic sport that requires a lot of skill and quick-mindedness.
“It’s fun to play, although there’s a level of difficulty to it,” Tong said. “There aren’t a lot of restrictive rules to beginners, but I would say it’s still pretty demanding.”
There are many different aspects about this club, but when choosing a favorite, Tong is sure it is the friendships that are made.
“When you’re playing with new players, you kind of get to bond with them, even when you don’t really know who they are,” Tong said. “It’s a good way to meet new people in school.”
Senior Lance Villarrael originally joined the club because he knows people in it, but now he is very much involved in the sport itself.
“I like the agility and how it’s not a contact sport,” Villarrael said. “It’s fun to run over and save the birdie, and I like the teamwork.”
Although Villarreal became interested in badminton for the social aspect, he has grown to genuinely like playing badminton.
“I love playing it so much,” Villarrael said. “It’s just so fun, and not like any other sport.”
