Serving Up a New JV Volleyball Coach

Coach Quinn McKee

Quinn McKee, or Coach McKee, is a different kind of teacher. Although recently graduated from Austin College, McKee is coaching the currently undefeated junior varsity (JV) volleyball team while simultaneously teaching history. McKee began playing volleyball the same year many students were born, 1997, and consistently played until 2011.

“After college, I coached four years of club at Excel Volleyball Club and Nortex Volleyball Club,” McKee said. “I also coached a seventh grade team at a private school.”

That being said, many students agree that McKee is a good addition to the Wolfpack. Not only can she catch Goldfish in her mouth, but she also has managed to build strong relationships with her players in the short time that she has been here.

“She really relates to her players and acts like an older sister by joking around a lot with us,” varsity player and senior Fayna Zeng said. “She’s really fun and is also a great coach.”

But it is not all fun and games for the unbeaten JV team. The girls still must endure consequences such as running, planks and other conditioning drills every morning.

“Coach McKee holds her girls accountable for their mistakes,” Zeng said. “For example, once she made them do punishments every time they cheated by starting too early, and they ended up cheating 42 times, so they got 42 consequences.”

However, it seems that their work has paid off for the 14 girls on the JV team. Their record is 13-0 as of Oct. 17 and are beating all other teams by a wide margin. Most notable is when they placed third at the Allen Junior Varsity tournament, one of McKee’s favorite moments of the season.

“It was so fun,” McKee said. “The girls played really well.”

With the end of the season approaching, both students and staff are pleased with the new addition to the Wolfpack.

“Coach McKee reminds me to work hard and not take any practice for granted,” junior Audrey Bramlett said. “She reminds me to stay out of my bad habits and value the work of my teammates more.”
