Personality Through the Pen
Writer’s Guild is a student-run club where students learn to express themselves through numerous forms of writing. The club has several ways to keep members engaged, starting the meetings with fun activities, such as blackout poetry, and ending the meeting with reading excerpts of different members’ writings. Each meeting has a theme, and the leadership encourages people to come if they want to learn more about that theme.
The vice president of Writer’s Guild, Vidya Mohanraj, is very hopeful and excited for the upcoming year.
“This year we are going over essay formats, prose and poems,” Mohanraj said. “We are trying to let people broaden their horizons when it comes to writing styles.”
Writer’s Guild encourages members to work and improve their writing and is always looking for new members. Mohanraj emphasizes that this club feels very different from a writing class, encouraging members to feel safe with sharing their works.
“It’s a place outside of school where members can feel comfortable and accepted,” Mohanraj said. “Members will not feel awkward when sharing their writing.”
To help it feel less like class and more like a fun experience, meetings start off with ice breakers to encourage friendship within the club.
“At the beginning of the meeting we start with a game,” Mohanraj said. “It lets everyone get comfortable right at the beginning.”
Many members come to get feedback on their writing from other people who are just as passionate as they are.
“I got more into poetry this year, when before it had just interested me,” senior Mariya Siliankia said. “This year I have just randomly been writing poems and sending them to my friends.”
Writer’s Guild has also inspired many members to do more outside of their comfort zone when it comes to writing. Senior Rafael Canadas goes because of this atmosphere.
“I hope to gain not just a chance to improve as a writer, but also to see and hear what other people think about my writing,” Canadas said. “I want to share my writing amongst members of the club; those who enjoy writing.”
