The Spirit of Giving

For many people, the holidays represent a mix of family gatherings, religious celebrations and festive foods. It is also a time when people come together and share their blessings by volunteering and making the holidays special for those who are not as privileged.

“Giving back to the community shows that you aren’t taking for granted the privileges you have in your life,” Key Club president senior Nathan Hsu said. “It really opens your mind to the world around you.”

There are countless ways to help people out during the holidays. Donating presents and food or spending a couple of hours volunteering can help spread the holiday cheer to those who are less fortunate.

“It makes an enormous difference,” National Honor Society president senior Laura Zhang said. “Even not during the holidays, dedicating your time is unbelievably helpful.”

There are always places looking for assistance. Volunteers can help out at various food pantries and soup kitchens or spend time helping out organizations such as Toys for Tots.

“It’s inspiring to see how many different events and activities go on in the community and the amount of people who are passionate about those things,” Hsu said. “Everyone is very enthusiastic and genuine about what they’re doing.”

Volunteers are also welcome at the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, an organization that provides a home for families with children who are patients at a Dallas-area hospital and are receiving treatment for a serious illness or injury.

“Our House is decorated by volunteers that come for five days and create a winter wonderland here at the House,” Ronald McDonald House volunteer coordinator Meg Bittner said. “We also have cooking groups that come in and volunteer their Thanksgiving and Christmas to not only cook for the families, but to purchase the food, prepare it, serve it and clean up.”

No matter where an individual decides to volunteer, it is a meaningful contribution and can make a big impact on another person’s life.

“In the spirit of giving back, people appreciate your time and your concern to help out,” Zhang said. “During the holidays, everyone deserves the same things: happiness, good company and, of course, lots and lots of delicious food.”
