Documenting Every Emotion with Selfies

First there was Easter Sunday.  Then came Super Bowl Sunday.  Now, Selfie Sunday is our generation’s latest take on the seventh day of the week. What exactly is a selfie and why do people take one? Some say it is for entertainment. Others think that selfies can be disturbing because they can get a little awkward sometimes. Selfies are something that let a person express themselves and show who they really are. They are a way for people to share parts of their life in a unique way and anyone should be able to take one.

According to Urban Dictionary, the official definition of a selfie is “a picture taken of yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook, My Space or any other sort of social networking site.”  What this definition does not address is the many different poses, backgrounds and facial expressions that “self-ographers” come up with every day. They are limited only by their own imagination. You are bound to hear about selfies at least once a day, whether it is over the Internet or at school. Celebrities such as Lindsey Lohan and Miley Cyrus take selfies to entertain people, but they are often just trying to shock the press and get some publicity.

At school, it seems like there is someone taking a selfie whenever you turn around the corner.  Some are to document a moment in time or a place, some are just to keep everyone up to date on what is going on, and some are just to make people laugh.  As long as people do not go overboard, they are not doing anything wrong and they have the right to express themselves.

Selfies are changing the social media sphere and are becoming more popular every day. People are posting them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to share their life experiences with their friends and family. There are many lessons for people to learn about taking selfies, understanding them and how they have evolved in the last couple of years. With enough practice, anyone can become a selfie pro and master “Selfie Sunday.”
