Dressing for Success
Dressing expresses personality, but is it worth it when it goes against modesty and hurts the school’s image? Most of the students get pretty upset when the topic of dress code is addressed. We like to be independent and in control of what we wear, yet we forget sometimes that school is a place to learn and the strict dress code implied upon us is for our own safety and modesty. And it is not just school; when we join the work force, we will have a dress code imposed upon us. For interviews, whether it be a college interview or a job interview, the way one dresses could have a heavy impact. If we learn to dress more appropriately today, it will be much easier for all of us in the future.
Even though some people love to be barefoot, especially in the hot summer heat, it is important to wear shoes at all times in school as they protect against anything unhygienic on the ground and it is for safety reasons.
It is understandable why the school administrators do not allow extremely short shorts: this is a reserved community and anything that seems indecent could be offensive. If you do want to wear shorts or skirts, make sure they are loose-fitting, are hemmed or cuffed and, most importantly, are at fingertip-length or longer. Even if a girl has long arms, it is still possible to find appropriate and trendy clothing.
Pants are an important factor to consider while dressing up and even though most girls are quite modest while choosing what pants they want to wear, it is guys who continue sagging, which is considered improper. It makes one look unprofessional and does not suit any atmosphere, including school where a business-like environment is expected.
Shirts define personality, and sometimes a text on a shirt can be a great way to express ideas. But since this is school and not a rebellious protest, shirts that contain provocative, offensive, violent, drug/alcohol or tobacco-related pictures or slogans cannot be permitted. Dress code ensures our own safety and provides a healthy learning environment.
When considering what top to wear on a school day, one should make sure that the top is not a tank top, tube top, halter type blouse or a mesh shirt. Remember, the three-finger rule does not apply to these; shoulders should be covered to show modesty and respect in our school. Also the top should not be too low. One way to measure is to make sure the neckline does not extend below the hand, when placed horizontally below the chin.
Not all piercings are permitted, and it is completely unacceptable to show any body piercings. If you do have a body piercing, it should be hidden under appropriate clothing. Body piercings include face piercings, especially on tongues or eyebrows. Ears are the only body part where piercings are acceptable.
Another aspect of our dress code includes the exclusion of any types of hats, caps, bandannas, head coverings or hoods. This rule might be contradictory to students who have to cover their heads for religious purposes, and could be offensive to men who wear a yarmulke or girls who wear a hijab.
