One of the age-old problems for high school students is a lack of money. The consensus seems to be: get a job. In this economy, that is easier said than done. The situation is only made worse due to the fact that many students do not see the value of a job, and therefore, do not want one. However, there are many students on campus who not only understand the value of work but truly love it.
“I enjoy my co-workers and the fun atmosphere of both my jobs,” senior Will Bramblett said. “It makes coming to work easy.”
Some students find that money becomes a secondary factor when working and that fears of losing friends were unnecessary.
“I started working mainly because I needed gas money,” Bramblett said. “But my jobs have become a huge part of my social life just because of the people I meet.”
A potential problem that many students face is balancing work with school. Some students have developed their own methods of coping with this issue.
“The days that I work, I work until eight, so I do not have much time to do homework or study afterwards,” senior Dorian Nelson said. “Usually if there is lull in business, I have my homework out and look over it when I can.”
Many students take into account their hobbies and interests and try to pursue a job that relates. This gets students invested in their work, so they achieve more and contribute more to the business all while enjoying the time spent doing it.
“I love clothes, so working at a clothing store only seemed logical,” Nelson said. “I love getting to help people put together outfits.”
Students who work feel that they have grown as people. One big thing that these students have in common is responsibility.
“My official title is Sales Associate, but I do a little bit of everything, which teaches me time management and responsibility,” Nelson said.
There are a variety of jobs to choose from, but for many students it is about finding the job that is right for them.
“I would like to work at Jumpstreet,” junior Lisa Micheals said. “I could jump on the trampolines and ride the mechanical bull, as well as learn all the really cool jumping maneuvers.”
