The runway has always been a place of extreme glamour and couture. It is home to new fashion trends that have demonstrated the artistic skill and creativity of each designer. Fashion has always been about dressing up the image of oneself with make-up, accessories and unique designs. However, there has been drastic change in fashion as it has shifted towards functionality and comfort and strayed from the idea that “beauty is pain.”
“I do not really understand it, but this past year everyone seems to really like comfortable workout clothes,” senior Carolyn Wynne said. “Everyone used to dress up, and now everyone seems to be dressing down.”
This shift in fashion has been present for several years. It can really be marked back to the growing popularity of Nike’s shorts. In 2009 an article was written by young journalist Caitlin Myers in the Southern Methodist University Daily Mustang newspaper.
According to Myers, Nike made no specific effort to advertise the Tempo shorts; instead, it was a photograph of Jessica Simpson wearing a pink pair that put the shorts in the spotlight.
“I remember that when I was a freshman, the administration at Jasper tried to ban Nike shorts,” senior Lainey Borgsmiller said. “But, after a while, they gave up because they could not dress code the entire school.”
A SheKnows Health and Wellness magazine article written by Michele Borboa explained the new fall fashion. She described the eight fall fashion trends to be translucent jackets with bright layers, slim fitting fitness wear, tights, yoga pants, colorful sports bras and gym shorts, all advertised to provide maximum comfort.
Borboa described the clothing of this season’s fashion to be shaped primarily around functionality and comfort. This trend accents the hallways of Plano West as girls take a strong liking to the athletic clothing fad.
“You can dress up and you can dress down,” junior Ari Surles said. “There are benefits to both, but the fashion of athletic clothes brings style to comfort, a dangerous combination.”
