Going into the movie theatre, people anticipate seeing an amazing movie. Whether they are watching a fast-paced action movie or a romantic chick-flick, moviegoers have an expectation that they will leave the theatre knowing that their money was well spent. A significant part of movies are the actors, and with bad actors comes crushing disappointment. Now more than ever, the entertainment industry has put talent behind fame and good looks as requirement for putting aspiring actors on-screen. As appearances and fame become more important, the quality of acting continues to decline.
In Hollywood, looks are important. That is a given. In the past, producers focused more on the talent behind the faces of their actors. The ability to act was the first and foremost requirement, which resulted in amazing films that audiences could not get enough of. Nowadays, celebrities like Taylor Lautner and Miley Cyrus are getting by on their fame alone. Despite their mediocre acting, loyal fans seem to be the only thing that keeps bringing them back onto movie sets.
Audiences were shocked when they witnessed the “talents” of one Kristen Stewart in the first Twilight in 2008. Many questioned the casting of Stewart as the female lead, but that did not stop her career from taking off. In the following years she starred in Adventureland, The Runaways and Snow White and the Huntsman, as well as the rest of the very successful Twilight Saga movies. Due to the fame her role as Bella Swan has brought her, Stewart continues to star in movies that film critics believe she has no business being a part of.
Movies are not the only disappointments; TV shows have also declined in quality with time. Falling Skies and The Secret Life of the American Teenager are just two of the shows in which the actors are only passable. An interesting storyline or good looks hook audiences despite the fact that the actors are less than convincing in their roles.
Although there are those few actors who rise above the rest, there is a strong demand for entertainment producers to up their game when it comes to choosing who will take the starring role in their movie or TV show. Audiences must not be complacent; there is true talent out there, if someone is willing to find it.
