Boy bands are a trend that fades in and out of the music culture. During the 90s, boy bands ranging from R&B to pop culture swept the nation with their likable beats and memorable lyrics. One of the most popular groups was ‘N Sync. In early 1995, the group was formed and took off with hit songs like “Tearin’ Up My Heart” and “I Want You Back.” They became famous overnight in many countries in Europe and the United States.
“‘N Sync had very catchy songs,” senior Hillary DeGracia said. “My cousins gave me a pink, ‘N Sync backpack for Christmas, and it made me love them even more.”
Their most popular album No Strings Attached sold more than 10 million records and ‘N Sync dominated the music industry. Yet, there was one member of the group who wanted to begin a solo career, and by 2001, after their six year reign, the group split up. Justin Timberlake’s solo career was the most successful of the five singers. Even though many teenage girls’ worst fear became reality, numerous people still love and listen to the legacy they left behind.
Another prominent boy band of the 90s was Boyz to Men. Their song “End of the Road” was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks. This success broke the legendary Elvis Presley’s records from decades before.
“I loved their song “End of the Road,” senior Kayla Stovall said. “They had a pop/ R&B/ soul kind of feel and that sound is really coming back around in the music world. I like how their sound has evolved.”
Several boy bands last a little less than their five minutes of fame. For example, Day 26, a group composed on the show Making the Band, only lasted a little past their first album.
“They used to be one of the best boy bands, until they broke up because of a female member from Danity Kane,” senior Leslie Celestine said. “I still have some of their songs on my computer.”
One Direction, today’s number one boy band discovered on the British X-factor, is a group that has made a huge impact on pop culture. Some fans might favor Zayn over Harry, but they love the group as a whole because of their music.
“I love Niall from One Direction because he’s the only one who’s not British, he’s Irish,” DeGracia said. “I think their group will last maybe five years because all boy bands have to end at some point.”
