With Halloween approaching, people can expect to see an increase in the number of ghosts, goblins, and ghouls, running about. They can also look forward to the rise of horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead, Greystone Park and Airborne. Horror movies are not solely for entertainment, but are used as tools to portray the moral principles that people should live by. This is beneficial because it shows consequences in dramatization, which thoroughly warns against the detrimental choices that people can make.
There are some people who view horror movies as crude and filled with unnecessary gore. These people say that it is because of horror movies that there has been a steady rise in crime rates and violence. What these people fail to see is that these “violent filled displays” are actually testimonies to what can happen when you live a life without caution, or discretion.
At the base of every film there is a lesson in how best to live life. Horror movies show the consequences of poor morals, and warn against the decisions made by the characters.
Take for instance the 2011 movie Cabin in the Woods. The five friends were warned against going to the cabin by Mordecai, the first harbinger of the whole story. The kids refused to listen to him and went anyway. This opened the door for the chaos, and eventually bloodshed.
Granted, there are some purely innocent bystanders who may on occasion suffer, but that is used to show how the poor choices made by the main characters affect others.
The 2002 zombie movie 28 Days Later show how the misguided actions of a few can affect the lives of millions.
Horror movies drive home the morals by which people should live. Often times the characters in these thrillers have done something condemnable in their past and the consequences are disastrous for them.
While some may say that horror movies are the cause of violence, it is important to remember that was never their original purpose. They are designed to warn against the poor choices that people make every day.
