Society is working hard to keep the earth eco friendly. Schools are trying to support the green movement, but are they doing everything they can? There are many improvements that could be made to take a step closer to making the school environment truly eco friendly.
The cafeteria is one of the places where most problems arise. Over the years styrofoam lunch trays have been placed in lunch lines instead of plastic. The styrofoam trays are a major hazard to the environment.
In school, students dump trays into trash cans along with other trash, avoiding any type of recycling. Styrofoam creates major waste in landfills and takes centuries to completely break down. Therefore, it plays a major part in the harmful pollution that affects the Earth today. To improve this issue, the trays should be switched back to plastic so they can be re-used.
Paper waste is another major problem that plays a role in this unhealthy environment. Some people do not pay attention to the amount of paper they are wasting daily. To fix this problem, more class set packets can be made and some activities can be completed on computers.
Recycling bins are everywhere, but they are not being properly used. Littering and the lack of recycling are some of the biggest problems present in schools. If all the students and teachers spent less than a minute of their time paying attention to where they are putting their trash, broad improvements would be made.
Trash belongs in their proper bins, not on the ground. The students and teachers at West should want a better environment surrounding them.
