Studying is a key essential to a student’s high school life. With all the modern technology surrounding everyone’s lives, it can be hard to avoid surfing the net instead of preparing for the next test. Sometimes students just do not know where or how to study and stay focused.
“Most video games have goals that keep players focused on completing them, which can keep a student from studying,” junior Zev Olschwanger said. “Games let you do things you cannot in real life.”
A big part of not being able to correctly study is the availability to access favorite social media sites. Students find themselves procrastinating through their weekly nights on the computer. The result of failing grades is not pretty. Not only do computers pull students away from studying, but video games are right up there with them. When do students know they have gone to far with abusing these pleasures and how do they stop?
“I study upstairs away from my computer until eight and then I go downstairs to finish the rest of my homework on the computer,” junior Rahul Modal said. “I reward myself whenever I write a paragraph.”
What students need to figure out is where and how to avoid the distractions. There are many places to study with the perfect atmosphere. Believe it or not, less comfort is better because it pushes the studier to work faster and steadier. Avoiding the technological pleasures is the biggest part.
“Part of the reason why teens find it so difficult to really get their work done is because they do their coursework in a comfortable setting, like a bed or a sofa,” junior Nick Shultz said. “So, maybe instead of being comfortable in a normal setting, you go a different route and sit in a small room, like a bathroom. The discomfort will most likely make it surprisingly easy for you to focus on your work, and will probably result in completed homework every night.”
There are many places students could turn to that have a good atmosphere for studying. Students just need to know how to step out of their everyday comfort and create a new comfort just for studying. There are many places in homes and outside that are perfect for studying. Sometimes students forget they have the choice of coffee shops and libraries. The variety of different places to study is almost endless.
“Sometimes you have to step outside of your world and into one of studying,” junior Avon Nguyen said.
