It has been said that on Dec. 21, 2012 the world will experience many catastrophic events that will eventually lead to the end of the world. The main reasons why people believe the world will end is a series of natural disasters, solar flares and an unexpected planet that has been rumored to be heading towards earth. All of these speculations are linked to the end of the ancient Mayan calendar. Although many do believe 2012 will mark the end of the world as we know it, others simply think nothing of it.
“I honestly do not believe that the world will end this year or anytime soon for that matter,” junior Addison Chappell said.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been carefully researching and conducting studies to ensure that Earth is not in danger of being hit by asteroids or any planets. However, NASA is researching a planet 0.named Nibiru that is believed by some to be heading towards earth. NASA’s response to the said planet Nibiru is that it is a fictional planet with no real influence on the destruction of Earth. Along with their intense research of asteroids and planets, NASA has also been frequently bombarded with questions over the said predictions of the world coming to an end. They have answered to these negatively by providing scientific evidence to back up their answers.
“At first I did go with the flow and thought the world was going to come to an end, but after reading a article where NASA assures us of no upcoming chaos, I feel safer and sure that the world still has years and years to live,” junior Rahalia Senior said.
Since the scare in 2000, the Y2K scare when it was said that computers would no longer recognize data, lose all information and would crash, people began to make assumptions about the world ending. In 2003, planet Nibiru was supposed to have hit Earth causing a disastrous encounter between the two that would have led to the end of the world, but when nothing happened the expected doomsday was moved and set for Dec. 21, 2012 instead. Since then, there have been many unexpected encounters with people claiming the end of the world to be near.
“I remember hearing and coming across all these random days when people said the world was going to end and being scared at the thought of losing everything,” junior Rebecca Witherow said. “But then I realized that the world is far from ending and that no one can really ever predict when it will end. And now I do not believe any of it.”
Unlike the other predicted days for the end of the world, many people believe in Dec. 21, 2012 more strongly and passionately because it seems to be a more realistic day due to the fact that Dec. 21 is also the day the Mayan calendar comes to an end.
“There are people who believe the world is going to end in 2012 because of the Mayan calendar,” junior Michelle Gallardo said. “But what they do not realize is that it will just be the beginning of something new instead of a tragic end. Everything will stay the same.”
Dec. 21, 2012 has made people question what to do, where to go, how to spend their last year and how to survive this tragedy that is said to take place. There are both believers till the end and people who do not even think twice about it. For those who do believe in the end of the world, there are websites dedicated to 2012 and how to survive what might be coming.
“I do not believe the world will come to an end,” junior Thomas Dubis said. “The only thing that will end is the Mayan calendar. But as for the world, I think it will surpass this chaos everyone talks about and everything will continue like normal.”
