Trends are always evolving for the teenage demographic from clothes to accessories to makeup. One trend that is ‘in’ is currently found around the school. Many girls around campus debate about sporting a tote bag or a backpack to carry around their supplies.
“I do not have that much stuff to need a backpack,” junior Victoria Rivens said. “Backpacks take up more room than a purse, and purses are less of a hassle and easier to carry.”
Though a backpack is known for being durable and a lifesaver when it comes to organization, a purse can do the same. Tight, narrow straps that dig into your arm while you are pushing your way through the chaotic hallways will always be a problem. Both purses and backpacks have them, just in different places and sometimes a different material. Purses tend to be smaller than backpacks, which is a healthy thing for ones back, neck and shoulders. Not only are they lighter, but they are unique as well. To be realistic, the main reasons students attend school is to learn and make good grades. Students cannot achieve their goal without their supplies, such as binders, papers and textbooks. Backpacks can carry more than enough stuff for school.
“Some girls still wear the good old-fashioned backpack, but now there are so many cute bags to carry,” junior Maya Hook said.
Purses come in more colors, brands and styles. Backpacks are very limited. Vera Bradley, Longchamp le Pliage totes and bags from Urban Outfitters are the most popular throughout West. They tend to get the job done, and on top of that, they are fashionable.
“Let us clear the air, I, being a guy, believe that girls who rock purses have a little something I like to call ‘swag’,” senior Charles Brewington said.
So what will you choose? An old fashion backpack that gives off a sense of control and a studious look or a tote purse that gives off fashion and style? Either way, you are looking good and you have all of your necessities.
“Whether a purse, sling, backpack or satchel, girls can switch it up to match their outfits,” junior Hook said.
