Adele, a British singer-songwriter from Tottenham, North London, England has grown in fame tremendously over the past five years in the United States. Many of her listeners favor her because of her unique style as an artist. Though she is placed in the category of soulful artists, she also incorporates pop and hip-hop into many of her songs. This is appealing to her younger, more modern listeners, but because of her fame much of her music is considered ‘played out’ on the radio. Many people question if playing her music so much will have a beneficial or a negative impact on her career.
“I hear Adele on almost every radio station, it gets annoying at times, but it’s okay because I love her music,” senior Devin Stephens said. Adele is well liked by a lot of her fans, mainly because of her personality. It tends to show through her songs.
“I like that she sings about personal problems and all her songs have a story behind them,” junior Mackenzie Wicker said.
Adele grew from a simple MySpace song to go on to win Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Adele and her music tend to be highly spoken of and are described as relatable and touching by friends. Adele released her first album called 19 in 2008 and her second album, 21, was released on Feb. 22, 2011 in the United States.
“Adele is different and not afraid to be herself,” junior Leah Casale said. “As of right now I am not going to her upcoming concert in October, but I would like to.”
While growing up, the music group the Spice Girls was a major influence in regard to her passion and love for music. After moving to South London with her mom when she was eleven, she became interested in R&B artists such as Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Mary J. Blige. Relatable is a key word when it comes to Adele, not only is she listened to by all ages, but by guys and girls both from all around the world.
“She is not afraid to sing about her past and her true stories of love,” junior Daisy Vaught said. “She sings directly to the world and explains how she feels. The intensity of her voice makes your heart ache for her pain.”
Unlike most female pop stars, she does not involve herself with the Hollywood pressures of impressing her audience with her looks. She clearly expresses that she is not insecure about her image as a normal person or a celebrity.
“A lot of people admire and look up to her because of her confidence and the way she carries herself,” senior Brittany Wilson said. “She does not worry about what other people think. She does her own thing and that is what makes her so appealing. She is going down in history for her inspirational voice. That is how much of an impact she has made on this generation.”
