IMG_7448Varsity lacrosse had their first match of the season on Feb. 2 against Frisco High and won by a score of 5-2. Junior Jackson Gunnells is a member of the varsity squad, and is looking excited about the team’s progression leading up to the new season.
“I’m looking forward to getting to play against some of the better players in the state,” Gunnells said. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to have success as an individual and as a member of the team as well.”
Gunnells is not the only one excited about the coming season. Junior Jordan Dahlquist experienced personal success in the 2015-2016 season, and is looking forward to extending his form from last year to the new season.
“One of the best parts about playing for West is getting to constantly improve your ability and push yourself to new limits,” Dahlquist said. “The fact that I’ve had success in previous years and levels has allowed me to play varsity which is a great achievement for me.”
While the focus is often on how student athletes perform in their respective sport, both Gunnells and Dahlquist believe that attending West has developed their skill on and off the field.
“As a team we learn on the field that we should persevere whether or not we experience defeat or hardship,” Gunnells said. “All the lessons that we taught on the field have a tremendous impact off it.”
Dahlquist was quick to back up the points that Gunnells made about the role of lacrosse in there life.
“Despite lacrosse being a team sport, I’ve learned from my coaches and individual mistakes to become a harder worker and a better teammate,” Dahlquist said. “It has also given me a chance to meet new people and develop friendships.”
Most of the team values the impact that Gunnells and Dahlquist have had and the benefits they have had for the team. One such teammate, Colton Mitz, had nothing but praise for their success.
“I’ve gotten to be on the team with Gunnells and Dahlquist and it’s been a great experience,” Mitz said. “Since the season is just starting I know that no matter what happens we will get to experience success.”
Gunnells and Dahlquist both believe that this season is a great opportunity for the team to be acknowledged for their success.
“Knowing my friends and family get to see me playing is great,” Dahlquist said. “Getting to play the game I’ve always loved in high school at such a great school is just another bonus.”
Gunnells seconded Dahlquist’s statements on the lacrosse team.
“My favorite part about playing for my school has been getting to represent Plano West and all its great students,” Gunnells said. “I am just looking forward to see what this season will turn into.”
