Patriots Win Super Bowl
February 9, 2017
On Sunday, Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, the New England Patriots of the American Football Conference (AFC) were crowned National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl LI champions, defeating the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football Conference (NFC) 34-28. Led by superstar quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots completed the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history to win their fifth championship on their ninth overall appearance, the most Super Bowl appearances of all time.
In front of more than 70,000 spectators at NRG Stadium and 111.9 million viewers on FOX channel, the Patriots rallied in the second half of the game, after suffering a 3-21 deficit in the first half, to send the game into overtime. Although Luke Bryan, Lady Gaga and Hamilton’s Schuyler Sisters, Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jasmine Cephas Jones, may have shared the stage, it is safe to say that they were not the only ones who performed on Sunday. After winning the coin toss and electing to receive the ball in overtime, Brady and the “Boston Brats” went to work, with running back James White scoring the game winning touchdown.
The New England Patriots finished the regular season with a record of 14-2 (Wins-Losses), narrowingly beating the Dallas Cowboys, who went 13-3, for the best record of the 2016 NFL regular season. Their run to the playoffs was equally as impressive as they won both their Divisional Playoff against the Houston Texans and the AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers by scoring more than 30 points.
As a result of their regular season and playoff dominance, the New England Patriots entered Super Bowl LI as the favorites; analysts at FOX Sports predicted that they would win by three points. However, nobody predicted that the game would play out as it did: a first half-thumping by the Falcons, a late run by the Patriots and for the first time in Super Bowl history, overtime play. Despite a close game with their NFC counterparts, “the Pats” followed through on the predictions in their favor, adding another big win to the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick dynasty.
Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, hoisted up the Super Bowl Championship trophy as high-powered confetti cannons fired in the air, concluding the day that New England Patriots players and fans alike will never forget. The next Super Bowl, Super Bowl LII, will be hosted at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Feb. 4, 2016. Will the New England Patriots repeat as Super Bowl champions? Will the Atlanta Falcons redeem themselves? Or the most appealing option for the majority of Plano West fans, will “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys make it all the way?
