Tennis Serves for Success
September 29, 2016
After representing the Wolfpack at State finals and being undefeated at the District, Area and Regional 6A divisions, the tennis team is ready to come back for another strong year.
The tennis team has won 16 straight District, 13 Regional and four State titles, and they are not done yet. Head Coach Morgen Walker has always had the same expectations for his players and is not letting his guard down anytime soon.
“The bar stays high based on what we’ve accomplished over the years,” Walker said. “Be in great shape, be battle tested and always put the team first and yourself last. This team is like every team we’ve had at Plano West: solid players who work hard and want to be successful both on and off the court.”
Junior Anup Arvind understands the pressure to keep up the team’s reputation across Texas, so he makes sure he stays on top of his game to guarantee the success of the team.
“I did some group clinics over the summer to train,” Arvind said. “They were pretty intense but I feel really prepared for the season.”
To most players, tennis is not just about the sport itself but also about the bonds they make with their teammates. With it being his last year playing for West tennis, senior Eric Lee has created a special connection with the team that he will carry with him to college.
“My favorite part about tennis is getting to spend time
with the people I love,” Lee said. “You can always have fun as long as you have people you care about around, despite the situation you may be in. I’m really looking forward to improving and bonding with the team this year.”
With players ready to improve and work together, the tennis team looks forward.
“This team has a sense of family that motivates me to be better,” Arvind said. “I’m proud to be a part of the pack and a team that shows what a great school we are.”
The team defeated Plano East on Sept. 20 with a score of 19-0 and again beat Grapevine on Sept. 23 finishing 15-4, remaining undefeated to continue to work towards their goal. Upcoming competitions with Plano Senior on Sept. 27 and Highland Park on Sept. 30 will be played on the courts at West.
“Bring a hat,” Walker said.
