The 2015-2016 golf program has proven that their organization is capable of continually developing talented and driven sportsmen and women. This school year has already resulted in many successes, such as placing first at the Mansfield Regional Preview at Waterchase on Feb. 16.
“The win at the regional preview earlier this year was our fourth win in a row and a great way to start the spring season,” senior Bryson Scott said.
The coaches have been helpful in aiding the athletes in their pursuit to find success. Through a bonded team, the golf program maintains a consistent will to strive for greatness.
“Coach Hardison and Coach Salinas have been very supportive of me and the rest of the team,” Scott said. “Their aid and support is very important to the team and we credit a large part of our success to them.”
Players are preparing for future events and competitions, building up excitement and determination to gain not only awards, but experience.
“Some upcoming events for the team include postseason tournaments, District, Regionals and State,” senior Travis McInroe said. “Personally, I’m looking forward to amateur tournaments this summer and getting prepared for college golf.”
The varsity boys golf team placed third at State last year and this year’s teams are prepared and determined to perform well again April 26-27.
“We have spent several hours on and off the golf course preparing for the State tournament,” Scott said. “We played a practice round and have already made several trips down to Austin to play Legacy Hills and get ready for this year’s State tournament.”
There is a sport stereotype that golf relies solely on the individual. However, the boys and girls golf teams pursue the sport together and aid one another in achieving their goals.
“Our team is very supportive of one another, and although golf is a very individualized sport, we spend a lot of time together practicing and playing,” Scott said.
Becoming a victorious golfer requires great concentration and commitment, two qualities that senior and team captain Camille Enright exhibits. Enright’s diligence resulted in her being awarded the coveted Sportsmanship Award for the 2015-16 season from the Texas Junior Golf Tour.
“The TJGT (Texas Junior Golf Tour) Sportsmanship Award is awarded by the tours coaches and staff, which is made up of high school golf coaches across the state and former college coaches, to a player that embodies the qualities of what the game was founded on,” Enright said. “I couldn’t have hoped to achieve a greater award. I always try to carry myself with grace and poise to set an example for younger players. I pride myself a lot on following and knowing the rules of the game as well.”
The team’s success is an outcome of diligent work, a staying power that deserves to be recognized not only by tangible awards but by support from The Hype, a student-formed group dedicated to raising school spirit.
“It would be great if the Hype came out and supported the team,” Scott said. “They are welcome to any of the Plano West tournaments.”
