Slam-Dunking Their Way to Victory
The Lady Wolves basketball team is composed of a confident group of girls who plan to take home the championship title in early March. The team is expected to head back to the State Championships in San Antonio, where they lost the title last year to Manvel High School.
“Our biggest goal is to definitely go back to State and win it,” senior Sydney Skinner said. “It’s what we strive for every day in practice and in every game.”
Individually, the players each have a remarkable trait of their own to bring to the table. The varsity roster includes Skinner, who committed to Harvard University in the fall, senior Kyrie McNeil and juniors Morgann Yancey and Natalie Chou, a member of the USA Basketball U17 Girls World Championship team.
“I definitely want to play in college,” Chou said. “Also, I want to play overseas and professionally in the Women’s National Basketball Association.”
In spite of each of the girls’ talent, they know that they must work hard and work together to be successful in reaching their ultimate goal: winning State.
“My goals for the team this year are to become more unified and to play more as a team,” Yancey said.
Despite the success and potential of the Lady Wolves, the stands during nearly every game are devoid of student fans including The Hype. The reason for the bare stands cannot be due to the fact that they are not diligent athletes.
“A common misconception about the girls team is that we don’t work hard, but our practices are actually difficult and we work just as hard as anyone else,” junior Meredith Brezovsky said.
For the girls of the 2014-2015 Lady Wolves Basketball team, the amount of time and effort put into each practice is reflected by their triumphant victories week after week. The undefeated team, as of Jan. 9, is more than a team, but a family, and that is what makes them so hard to beat.
“The West team has become more like a sisterhood to me,” McNeil said. “It’s being close to the girls and being able to play with your best friends that I would say is the best part of being on the team.”
