Student Section Expansion
The Hype share the common goal of spreading school spirit throughout the entire student body. This devoted student section is starting to spread to all sports (not just football and basketball) such as swimming, and is anticipated to expand to every sports team in the school.
Students have been participating in The Hype since its arrival last year and have continued to spread school spirit since, especially to sports that often go unnoticed.
“Tennis has been one of the most successful programs at West and could really use more support,” senior Guy Sacco said. “The Hype has also made several appearances at swim meets, but I believe it should have a more consistent presence poolside.”
Varsity swimmer senior Salar Fahim also agrees that The Hype should be expanded to other sports.
“Overall, The Hype should support all sports in the school because that’s the only way to truly be a student section,” Fahim said.
Students have been working on making The Hype huge through tweets, fervent cheering and attendance.
“I have gone to every single game,” senior Grace Lingor said. “I also tweet about The Hype and retweet some of The Hype’s tweets.”
Along with social media, signs have been a popular and creative way for students to show their school spirit.
“We like to be the only thing on the opposing team’s mind by bringing the largest and most ridiculous signs,” Sacco said. “For instance, Parker Ragle has a wide array of signs that say things like ‘That Was Easy,’ while others, like myself, bring giant heads on posters in order to distract the other team.”
The expansion of The Hype not only brings the school together but also greatly encourages the team being supported. The motivation of the members on the swim team has increased greatly, thanks to The Hype.
“As a team, everyone performs better, and it’s cool to see people from your classes come out and support you,” Fahim said. “It motivates everyone to go faster.”
The Hype has been successful in its beginning year, and its goal is that it will continue to boost the morale of every team at West.
“The Hype is for sure a lasting tradition,” Lingor said. “It’s something I’ll look forward to seeing when I come back and visit, and hopefully, it will be equally spread across all the sports in the school.”
