Softball Hosts Fundraiser

For many groups at West, fundraising plays a major role in the program’s ability to run smoothly and fund activities. Last month, the softball team hosted the 2014 Texas State Movers Wolf Pack Classic Tournament, their biggest fundraiser of the year.

“The fundraiser is important because we have to raise money to pay for tournaments and fund items for softball,” softball player junior Madi Unger said.

Last year, the tournament raised enough money to build a locker room and update the public address (PA) system. However, there are many more improvements the team is in need of.

“The softball program has a wish list for short and long range amenities,” golf chairperson Vivian Unger said. “We are in need of upgrades for our batting cages and tarp and improvements for the field and locker room.”

In order to raise money to meet these needs, the booster club spent months organizing the event, which consisted of a golf tournament, auction and dinner. Their efforts paid off, and the funds that were raised will be put towards updating and maintaining the team’s facilities.

“The golf and silent auction committee spent the last eight weeks working tirelessly on all the details necessary for a successful tournament,” Vivian said. “This year they exceeded last year’s performance on all levels—entertainment, food, fun, contests, prizes, auction items and fundraising. Bill Butler, treasurer, is reporting that we raised over $17,000 this year.”

Gerry Walsh, booster president, attributes this success to the players’ dedicated families.

“Active participation by all families is a key component of the fundraiser,” Walsh said. “We had a great team of parents working together to make this fundraiser a great success.”

The involvement of the teammates themselves also played a big role in the fundraiser’s success.

“We were very active in getting donations, setting up and selling raffle and dinner tickets,” softball player junior Marissa Butler said.

After putting in all that work, the team and the booster club were able to see everything come together at the tournament.

“I was able to play a round of golf and I got a chance to chat with friends, golfers and our wonderful sponsors,” Walsh said. “I want to ensure that they have enjoyed themselves and let them know that the booster club and the players really appreciate their support.”
