Let the gridiron madness begin. The Bowl Championship Series for the 2012-2013 season begins Dec. 15 and continues through 35 games to the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 7. Some of the more popular bowl games are the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, LA and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, AZ. All teams compete for their place at the top of the leaderboard.
“The playoff system will prove to be an interesting change,” senior Giorgiana Kindricks said. “I can’t wait for the game.”
The BCS voted on a new postseason format that will begin in the 2014 season. Along with this, the BCS Championship will be held on the first Monday of January, known as Championship Monday. The one thing that will not change is the rivalry and the hype over who will play who, in what bowl and for what title. Whether a sports fan or not, this championship is a tradition among families across the country, either as a holiday or a New Year’s Day tradition. These bowl games are the zenith of all college football activity. Bragging rights for the year ride on the outcome of these games. A BCS custom for the Rose Bowl is the Parade of Roses on New Year’s Day.
“I’ll be watching the BCS National Championship,” senior Jordan Hall said. “Maybe there will be a new champion.”
Three bowl games will make their way here to DFW, including the AT&T Cotton Bowl at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, the Heart of Dallas Bowl at Fair Park in downtown Dallas and the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. The Heart of Dallas Bowl will be on New Year’s Day, the AT&T Cotton Bowl will be three days later on Jan. 4, and the Armed Forces Bowl will take place on Dec. 29. The changes for the Cotton Bowl to be moved to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and be renamed the Heart of Dallas Bowl sparked some resentment from the BCS.
“I am looking forward to seeing UT go all the way,” senior Adrian Reed said.
With the New Year comes vengeance for what was dealt the year before. Every team competing in these games has to go through intense practice and training just to be claimed worthy of being matched up against whomever they are playing. This system puts the teams that ranked high enough to be matched against each other, and the best moments will be saved for game night under the lights.
“I expect Oregon [to] win the BCS title because they seem [to be] the best team left,” Kindricks said.
